Creating safer working environments
During 2023/24 almost 20% of non-fatal injuries to employees (reported under RIDDOR), were caused by handling, lifting and carrying. Alongside, stress, depression and anxiety, musculoskeletal disorders accounted for the majority of days lost, due to work-related ill health, 16.4 million and 7.8 million respectively.
On average, each person suffering took around 14.3 days off work as a consequence of Musculoskeletal disorders.
Educating people in manual handling principles and practices is an important part of safety behaviour, and raising awareness to reduce the risk. As part of reducing the risk, it is essential to ensure manual handling operations are as safe as reasonably practicable, monitoring and reviewing procedures, processes, information, instruction and training.
