Champion positive youth mental health
During this course learners will be equipped with the knowledge to recognise a wide range of mental health conditions and learn about the support/therapy provided by professional healthcare providers.
Learners will not diagnose or treat mental health conditions, as this can only be carried out by healthcare professionals, but they will be able to champion a positive mental health culture in the workplace and they will be equipped with the knowledge and information to offer non-judgmental active listening and communication skills, offering people attentive listening, reassurance and support.

During this course learners will be equipped with the knowledge to recognise a wide range of mental health conditions and learn about the support/therapy provided by professional healthcare providers.

Understand and identify the diverse nature of mental health, including identifying factors that can affect a young person’s mental health and wellbeing
Understand a range of mental health conditions and the support/therapy provided by professional healthcare providers
Offer support and guidance, signposting people to the appropriate support and professional assistance as required
Learn effective non-judgemental communication skills, using attentive and active listening and communication skills
Champion change and a positive culture around mental health
Develop and implement mental health first aid action plans, policies and procedures

We will also cover substances and the impact of drugs and alcohol.

On successful completion, all learners will receive their accredited Ofqual regulated FAA Level 2 Award in First Aid for Youth Mental Health (RQF) / Level 5 Award in First Aid for Youth Mental Health under the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF).

The FAA Award in First Aid for Youth Mental Health qualification is suitable for anyone who actively connects with children and young people such as parents, carers, teachers, youth group leaders and young adults.
The qualification has been designed with children and young people in mind covering areas such as depression, self-harm, eating disorders and bullying and will provide the knowledge to recognise a range of mental health conditions, start a supportive conversation, and provide guidance to professional help. Learners will learn how to recognise and manage stress.
Learners will not diagnose or treat mental health conditions, as this can only be carried out by healthcare professionals, but they will be able to champion a positive mental health culture in the workplace and they will be equipped with the knowledge and information to offer non-judgmental active listening and communication skills, offering people attentive listening, reassurance and support.

Learners must be aged 14 years or over, and it is recommended that learners hold a minimum of level 1 in literacy (or equivalent) to undertake this qualification.
Due to the level of unsupervised learning, a learner undertaking a distance learning course must have the literacy skills to complete the required self-study.

This course is delivered remotely over 1 day, via video conferencing software. Our approved, quality-assured trainers will be available for the full duration of the course. Training will start at 9:30am and finish at 17:30 each day.
Training will be delivered via a variety of resources including webinars, group activities and online resources. This course requires a commitment with a total qualification time of 7 hours. For those wishing to study a combination of self-study and trainer led guided learning, a commitment of at least 3 hours guided study and 4 hours self-study will be required.

The assessment consists of a written assessment paper, and professional observation/discussion, and practical demonstration throughout the course.
A learner must pass the assessments to be awarded the qualification.

Your qualification will be valid for up to 3 years. Annual refreshers are advised. Following the 3 years, the course will need to be completed again to requalify.
