Championing mental health in the workplace

Mental health conditions are often hidden due to stigma and fear of discrimination and research found that a culture of fear and silence around mental health is costly to employers. HSE guidance on conducting a 'first aid needs assessment’ refers to mental health in the workplace, and places emphasis on an employer’s need to consider employee’s mental health as part of their assessment.

Approximately 1 in 4 people in the UK will experience a mental health condition and at least 1 in 6 employees experience common mental health problems in the workplace such as anxiety and depression.

The Health and Safety Executive recently reported that during 2023/24 stress, depression or anxiety accounted for 46% of all work-related illnesses.

With this in mind, their recent revision to the First Aid at Work: The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 Guidance note L74 has been updated, to emphasize the need for employers to take account of employee’s mental health as part of their first aid needs assessment.
