Being prepared with first aid
It is a requirement under health & safety law that employers provide a safe and healthy environment for people in the workplace. If your assessment of first aid needs highlights the need for qualified first aiders, then this level 3 qualification (level 6 in Scotland) will provide you with suitable, highly trained personnel.
This three-day course covers a range of first aid responses, enabling successful attendees to deal with emergency situations with confidence and competency.

The learner will gain the knowledge and practical competence required to deal with a wide range of workplace first aid situations. The qualification is also suitable for people with responsibility for the provision of first aid in other settings such as voluntary and community groups.
The qualifications is delivered, assessed, and quality assured adhering to the Assessment Principles for Regulated First Aid Qualifications.
Where a first aid needs assessment identifies the necessity for a first aider in the workplace, this three-day qualification meets the requirements of the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 and the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1982.

Understand the role and responsibilities of a first aider
Assess an emergency situation safely
Provide first aid to an unresponsive casualty
Provide first aid to a casualty who is choking
Provide first aid to a casualty with external bleeding
Provide first aid to a casualty who is suffering from shock
Provide first aid to a casualty with minor injuries
Conduct a secondary survey
Provide first aid to a casualty with suspected chest injuries
Provide first aid to a casualty with suspected head and spinal injuries
Provide first aid to a casualty with an eye injury
Provide first aid to a casualty with burns and scalds
Provide first aid to a casualty with suspected poisoning
Provide first aid to a casualty with anaphylaxis
Provide first aid to a casualty with suspected major illness

On successful completion, all learners will receive an accredited Ofqual qualification in FAA Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (RQF) / Level 6 Award in First Aid at Work (SCQF).

Learners must be aged 14 years or over, but please note that a learner cannot assume responsibility of being a first aider in the workplace until they reach 16 years of age.
It is recommended that learners hold a minimum of level 1 in literacy (or equivalent) to undertake this qualification.

Due to the practical nature of the first aid assessment there are physical demands. Learners must be able to get to the floor unaided and successfully demonstrate all required elements of the practical assessment on their own, with the casualty on the floor, as in a real-life situation. This course is delivered over a period of 3 days.
Training will be delivered via a variety of resources including face-to-face (in person) training, group activities and practical exercises. Some aspects will be delivered via video conferencing on the first day of training.

The qualification is assessed through practical demonstration and a written assessment.
There is no grading of the assessment, learners pass or are referred. A learner must satisfactorily complete each scenario to pass the practical assessment.
Scenarios are set recreating a real-life situation as far as possible to enable a learner to demonstrate their knowledge and practical skills. During the practical assessment the learner will be asked set related oral questions by the trainer/assessor. The practical assessment is ongoing throughout the course with the trainer/assessor making learners aware of when they are being assessed and what they are required to demonstrate. A learner must satisfactorily complete each scenario to pass the practical assessment.

Your qualification will be valid for up to 3 years from the date of achievement.
Annual refreshers are strongly recommended by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Following the 3 years. The HSE guidance states that on expiry of the qualification a first aider is no longer considered competent to act as a first aider in the workplace. It is advisable to arrange requalification before expiry to ensure that a workplace is not left with a shortfall of qualified first aiders.
